James K-Nine was a New Orleans vocalist and this is believed to be his only 45. Originally released on New Orleans DJ/Record Impresario Shelley Pope’s Hot Hit label in 1973, “Counting Tear Drops” is a cover of fellow New Orleans vocalist Doug Anderson’s 1965 recording of the song which Hines licensed for release to Chicago’s USA label. The flip side “Live It Up” is a Eddie Bo funk instrumental which doesn’t actually feature K-Nine at all. I don’t believe Hines had anything to do with this 45 other than the fact they covered a song of his. It appears that Pope took a cut of the writing credit on the initial release but this wasn’t tied over for the Federal issue, but it did pick up the ubiquitous Federal “Ft. Knox” publishing credit.
