L. Johnson Jr.

Big Beat 1376  – You Gotta Have Soul /I Been Down So Long (1972)

This 45 is the solo debut for Luther Johnson Jr, better known as Guitar Jr.  A fixture of the Chicago Blues scene of the 1960s/70s, Johnson performed with Magic Sam but is probably best known for his stint as Muddy Waters’ guitarist from 1972-1980 & for his own solo recordings on Alligator, Rooster & Telarc.  He later relocated to the East Coast & continued his career.  Confusingly, there are two other blues guitarists named Luther Johnson and also at least one other Guitar Junior.   You Gotta Have Soul is strong funky soul/blues in a later West Side style but unfortunately, the flip, a version of Magic Sam’s I Been Down So Long is marred by terribly out of tune piano.
